Balance and Discipline -- August 5, 2011

 "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.  For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do."  (Romans 7:19-20)

The fact that I've skipped two Friday posts ought to tell you what my life has been like lately.  Fortunately, I was the good kind of busy:  my daughter and I went to visit my mom the first weekend and my brother and his family were visiting us the second weekend.

Not only did we all enjoy the company, but having company come visit was great for getting the house cleaned up thoroughly.  I still have a few trouble spots like the "catch-all" office and our tiny kitchen which is overrun with food and kitchen supplies.  {Hopefully, this will be our next project after we finish our garage!}

In general, I use the FlyLady system as my housekeeping guide.  I have my house divided into Zones that I try to work in each week (doesn't always work out that way):  Zone 1 is the Front Porch and Dining Room; Zone 2 is the Kitchen; Zone 3 is Gracie's Room, the Office, and the hall bathroom; Zone 4 is the Master Bedroom and Bathroom; and Zone 5 is the Living Room.

The features I use the most from FlyLady are the Morning and Evening Routines as well as Weekly Tasks.  I have a great app for my iPhone to help with this:  HomeRoutines  Someday in the future, I will do a feature post on how I use this app.

One of the items on my To Do list is to make a routine/task chart for my daughter.  I want to get her used to doing things she needs to do at certain times of the day (upon waking up, before naps, at bedtime).  She's only 18 months old, so she's likely to have very little understanding, but I think in a way, it will be fun for her and certainly a great training tool.  Once I get this done, I will post about it.

One thing I have done to help me in the Spiritual area of my life is I have put Audio CDs of the Bible in my car.  It seems like nearly every day I'm "in the middle of the road" running errands and doing this and that.  This is a great way for me to multitask and get more Bible in me.

I still struggle in each of the areas that I mentioned before.  I know that one thing that would help is if I could get up earlier than my daughter.  Usually (because I tend to stay up late), I will sleep until my daughter wakes up.  This morning, she happens to be sleeping in which is one reason why I get to write this post so early.  I intended to write last night, but I actually went to bed early.  Ideally, I would like to get up at 6 AM.  I know that I could get a ton of stuff done before Gracie wakes up.  She tends to wake up around 7:15 or so (sometimes earlier, sometimes later).

For this next week, I will set myself three goals:

  • Get up at 6 AM (with the exception of the weekend since those are the two days I can truly sleep in because my husband can tend to my daughter)
  • Complete my Morning Routine every day and Weekly Tasks for the week
  • Work on getting the catch-all room (the Office) in order
Overall, the past three weeks haven't been horribly-bad.  I have made some improvements, but I still have a ways to go.
